#LAKings Rapid Review: Notes and Highlights from Kings 3-2 OT Victory Over Oilers in Game 3 (M

Three games into the Kings-Oilers opening round matchup, there have already been two games needing overtime — and the Kings won both, including Friday’s 3-2 contest. Trevor Moore gave Los Angeles a 2-1 series lead with his marker just 3:24 into the extra session.
For those who enjoy history, it marked the first time LA had played an overtime in their home building since Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. That game against the New York Rangers actually needed double-overtime; ending when Alec Martinez scored one of the most iconic goals in franchise history.
Unlike the two games in Edmonton early this week, LA took a 1-0 lead off an Alex Iafallo goal recorded at 19:27 of the opening frame. That stanza concluded much better than it started, as just 39 seconds after puck drop, Phil Danault found himself in the penalty box after a tripping call. The Oilers took three penalties of their own in the opening period, including a Darnell Nurse tripping infraction on Viktor Arvidsson that was initially reviewed to determine if a major penalty was warranted.
The Kings surrendered two power play goals to Oilers captain Connor McDavid before the game had reached the halfway mark of regulation. Yet, Adrian Kempe waited just 18 seconds after Edmonton had taken a 2-1 lead to tie things back up. With nobody finding the back of the net in period three, it was off to overtime. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins took the Oilers seventh penalty of the night and the Kings went to work. Quinton Byfield and Gabe Vilardi did the early work on their shift, and then Moore finished it off for the game winning goal.

— In scoring his first career overtime goal (regular season or playoffs), Trevor Moore became the first California-born player to score a postseason overtime goal for a California-based team. Three other California-born players had previously scored in overtime for teams not based in the Golden State: Jason Zucker (2013), Brooks Orpik (2013 & 2019), and Auston Matthews (2020).
— Adrian Kempe now leads LA with three goals in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In his career, he’s recorded 10 postseason points (5G, 5A) against Edmonton, the most among any active skater. Additionally, his five playoff goals vs. the Oilers are tied for most among active skaters with Jakob Silfverberg.
— Alex Iafallo goal with 33 seconds remaining in the first period was the third Kings goal this postseason scored with under a minute to go in any period: Gabriel Vilardi, 19:16 of P2, April 19 at EDM and Anze Kopitar, 19:43 of P3 on April 17 at EDM).
— Anze Kopitar registered his team-leading fourth assist and fifth point of the postseason. It was also his 75th career playoff point (23G, 52A), making him the third player to record 75 playoff points as a member of the Kings, the two others being Luc Robitaille (89), and Wayne Gretzky (94).
— Joonas Korpisalo stopped 38-of-40 shots for his fifth career playoff victory.
