Final Day Roundup – FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 – European Qualifier 2021

The final day of the FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 – European Qualifier 2021 was played here in Cardiff, with World Ranking points on offer, every game proved to be competitive.

Match 9: Poland v Italy 1 – 1 (3 – 2 SO) (7th/8th ranking)

Jacek Jurowski, Polish captain summed up the week “Tough week for our young team and tough to concede so many goals in the first two games, but great to have a win in the end. I was especially pleased with our defense and offensive. It was very important for us to win today.” 

Match 10: Scotland v Russia  4 – 2 (5th/6th ranking)

Cameron Golden, Scotland (double goal scorer today) “We had to regroup and we had to stay motivated, as there are world ranking points at stake. We know we need these points for next summer and European qualification.” 

Match 11: Austria v Ireland 3 – 3 (4 – 3 SO) (3rd/4th ranking)

Oliver Binder , Austria who scored the equalizer in the final minutes to bring the game to a shootout) said  “We know Ireland is a very good team and they showed it, so we were happy to get to a shoot out as we know we probably have the best Goalkeeper in the world at shootouts. For now, we are really looking forward to the Indoor season, which is really our game!” 

Match 12: France v Wales  1 – 2 (Final)

With both teams already qualified for the 2023 FIH World Cup, today was all about earning vital ranking points which could be useful when pools are decided for the 2022 EuroHockey Championship Qualifiers and the World Cup.

Lewis Prosser, Welsh captain on the game and World Cup Qualification said “Feeling unbelievable, it was quite nice to have qualified yesterday, so we had nothing to lose. We did concede early on but stuck to our game plan and our processes to get the win! Now we go back to our clubs and have a hell of a year ahead with this team!”
