#LAKings Cal Petersen Inks New Three-Year Deal with LA Kings (MayorsManor)

With one year remaining on his current contract, LA Kings goaltender Cal Petersen has inked a new three-year extension with the club. Details are expected to officially be announced later today. However, we’ve learned the deal carries a $5M average salary.
Earlier this summer, the Kings began negotiations with Petersen on a new contact, with the hopes they’d wrap things up before the season started. As training camp opens this week, mission accomplished.
Ever since originally signing with the Kings in July 2017, as an unrestricted free agent out of Notre Dame, Petersen has been the heir apparent to Jonathan Quick – the man in waiting, if you will. A former AHL All Star, the Iowa native began his push as the team’s No. 1 goaltender last season, playing in 35 games, compared to Quick’s 22.
Over the course of those games in 2021, Petersen posted a .911 save percentage and 2.89 goals against average. More recently, he was named the top goaltender at the IIHF World Championships, while playing for Team USA.
With the Kings looking to make a playoff push in 2021-22, Petersen is once again expected to play the majority of games in net.
Back in 2019, he was the No. 1 prospect in the LA Kings organization.
Earlier in his career, Petersen attend the goaltending school of former Kings netminder Robb Stauber. The two reunited at the AHL All Star Game in Ontario back in 2020 and Petersen has paid tribute to Stauber’s mask designs in recent years.
