Bad defeated worse on Tuesday night as the Kings welcomed fans back to Staples Center for the first time in more than 13 months. The seventh-place Kings shut down the last-place Ducks and took a 4-1 victory from them, taking advantage of a handful of scoring chances to win.
The Kings looked refreshed and re-energized after two games against Colorado in Denver were postponed because of COVID-19 concerns with the Avalanche. The Kings last played April 14 and used the windfall time off to polish some of the rough edges of their play.
Tuesday’s game was the first in a stretch in which the Ducks will play the Kings five times in six games, including in four consecutive contests next week. The Ducks were originally scheduled to play the Kings in five straight, but a game against Vegas was rescheduled.
A fortunate bounce gave the Kings an early lead and they maintained it and extended it with opportunistic play with the puck and determined defensive play without it. The Ducks carried the play at times, but couldn’t put the Kings or goalie Cal Petersen in jeopardy often enough.
Cam Fowler’s goal cut the Ducks’ deficit to 4-1 and ended Petersen’s shutout bid with 5:24 left in the third period.
The Kings took a 1-0 lead 5:26 into the game with a goal that almost defied description, but here goes: Andreas Athanasiou took a shot – a casual-looking flip from the left wing – that struck teammate Carl Grundstrom in the back and skipped past Ducks goaltender Anthony Stolarz.
Stolarz simply couldn’t track the bouncing puck and the Kings had an early lead.
Scoring chances were few and far between in the first period as the Kings retreated into the one-three-one setup, a defensive ploy designed to slow the opposition by clogging the center of the ice. It’s often effective in clogging the flow of the game, too.
Stolarz returned to the Ducks’ net after John Gibson was in goal for their losses to the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday and Sunday. Stolarz won the previous two, stopping 73 of 74 shots, in victories last week over the San Jose Sharks, and earned another start.
The Ducks didn’t give Stolarz much help in the second period and their deficit grew to 3-0 heading into the third. Anze Kopitar scored on a breakaway and Athanasiou converted on a cross-ice pass from Olli Maatta as the Kings took control in the middle period.
Petersen didn’t have much work, and Drew Doughty bailed him out with the save of the game, denying a late bid from Adam Henrique while the teams skated four-on-four late in the second. Petersen was out of position, but Doughty made a chest save and a beauty.
Most of the Kings’ best play took place in the neutral zone, along the boards and in the corners. They made it difficult for the Ducks to get the puck through center ice and when they did, the Kings pushed them to the outside, out of the danger zones in front of Petersen.
The Ducks didn’t give up much to the Kings, either. But the Kings capitalized on a couple of scoring chances. Kopitar slipped behind the flatfooted Ducks, accepted a pass from Doughty and beat Stolarz. Athanasiou settled into an open patch of ice and awaited a pass from Maatta to score.
Henrique had the Ducks’ best scoring chance, by far, in the first two periods.
Blake Lizotte sealed the deal with a third-period goal that made it 4-0.
