Journalist asks Jose Mourinho what he thought of controversial handball decision

Jose Mourinho has refused to speak about the controversial decision to award Newcastle United a late penalty after his side’s 1-1 draw against the Magpies.

Tottenham made a swift start to the game but wasted several chances to take the lead before Lucas Moura put them ahead as he slid in at the far post to convert a low cross from Harry Kane.

The Lilywhites could have put the game to bed as they fashioned openings galore throughout the match but an inspired performance by Karl Darlow in the Newcastle goal kept the away side in the game.

Steve Bruce then predictably threw Andy Carroll on as the Magpies decided to pump it long in the hope of fashioning a chance but they did not manage to test Hugo Lloris even once.

However, in what was essentially the final kick of the match, referee Peter Bankes decided to award the away side a penalty after reviewing a handball incident involving Eric Dier on the pitchside monitor.

The decision seemed incredibly harsh on the Lilywhites, with Mourinho storming down the tunnel after Callum Wilson converted the spot-kick.

Mourinho refused to comment about the decision after the game, insisting simply that he was happy with his side’s performance.

He told Football.London: “I cannot ask more than what we did, offensively and defensively. It was a very complete match from us. I do not want to comment about it [the VAR decision].”

He added (Independent): “I react during the game but the game is finished and I don’t want to speak about it. If I want to give money away I’ll give it to charities, not the FA, so I won’t comment.”
