Golf: Region's top senior women amateurs battle Canada's best
Four of the Capital Region's premier senior golfers participated in a Ryder Cup-style event May 15 and 16, with golfers from upper New York representing the United States against a Canadian team from Ontario.
The Ada MacKenzie matches, named for a pioneer of women's golf who won international and Canadian golf championships during a long and distinguished career (www.ladiesgolfclub.com/adamackenzie), was played at Ravenwood Golf Course in Victor.
In 1924, she founded the Ladies Golf and Tennis Club of Toronto, the only golf club in North America exclusively for women.
Many of the New York participants have won state titles at either the amateur or senior amateur level.
Selections were based on finishes in last year's state senior amateur tournament.
New York State Golf Association Scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year are still available for deserving students who either play in NYSGA competitions or are employed by NYSGA member clubs (pro shop, bag room, or golf course maintenance).
Founded in 2008 by Judith Rudolf of Mohawk Country Club, the match play competition between area clubs is now in its ninth year.
EduKaytion Golf's Kay McMahon, LPGA Teaching Hall of Famer, and Eloise Trainor, founder of the Futures Tour (now the Symetra Tour) are hosting the WGD local event at Mill Road.
The Northeastern Women's Golf Association kicked of its 2017 season Monday with a four-player scramble at Shaker Ridge.
