TRETHORNE GOLF CLUB COMMITTEE MEETING   Minutes of Committee Meeting held on Monday 8th May 2017   PRESENT S Saunders, H Gushlow .J Vidler, L Jewell, D Shovell, C Edmonds APOLOGIES C Brewer, J Grainger, J Austin,C Eyles,D Gibbard,J Flux, G Saunders,   Meeting Started at 1910hrs.   Acceptance Minutes of Committee Meeting 6th March 2017   Matters arising.   See AOB   COURSE REPORT   Well a busy but successful April on the course. The grass started growing early on but was then checked by the prolonged dry spell. 25 days with no rain in our gauge and only 13mm in total for the month. The irrigation system had to be fired up and the greens watered 2 to 3 times a week. It’s still a bit cold and windy for strong growth yet.   Greens have been coming on nicely. This month they have had a light winter feed to help them through the dip in temperature they had, plus a pesticide treatment for leatherjackets which seems to of worked. They have had an application of preventative fungicide too. They also had the first verticut of the year followed by a topdressing which was worked in as quickly as possible in a dry month.   Tees/surrounds/approaches These are now being cut or double cut where necessary at summer heights, currently twice a week. The tees have had a little slow release granular feed which will support growth throughout the season. Blue tee markers have now gone out on course.   Fairways/Rough Fairways are being cut twice a week at summer heights, with the dry weather we have extended them out to summer widths early too. Rough is being cut once a week with the longest bits being done again on a Friday. All rough areas of the course and the practice area have been sprayed for weeds, these should start to look a bit miffed with life and dissappear soon!   Other work The bunkers have been edged twice this month. The bases have been sprayed with total weedkiller and the edges have been growth restrained to prevent regrowth. A lot of work has gone into getting the new second up and running with many drains put in and the ropes and fencing taking down. This area is being cut regularly now. It has also had more fertiliser applied and been seeded again. The total weedkiller run has been started, this is an ongoing never ending get job! Plus all the usual mechanical jobs we need to do to keep the equipment going. The range has been busy and is being collected every other day minimum. Cliff Gormley has started helping us two to three days a week on the course which is much appreciated.         CAPTAINS REPORT   The official season is here, and already so much to report on; On from the Senior Captain vs Club Captain match (March 5), the Mens section went onto play Merlin away which resulted in a narrow defeat of 5-3 (March 12), Bude & North Cornwall where the team took a little more of a hammering losing 6-1 (March 18) and more than this, the inaugural Spring cup was competed for on March 19, with the Mens winner being Geoff Saunders and Ladies section Judith Sweet.   The second year of the winter league came to an end on March 31st, declaring Simon Price as Champion, Kevin Woolley in second and Chris Copley third. With an entry of more than 25, the running of this year’s event was an improvement on last, but I believe there are things still to be done, and will be worked on for this coming winter seasons’ event.   April 1st seen presentation evening kick the season off with a bang. In what I hope was an evening enjoyed by all, I believe Johnny Cowling was more than a success and with Paul Hamlyn making the memories of the evening through photography, the late hours led nicely into the following days Captains drive in. The traditional event, as always was well supported, with the field being led by myself, Les Jewell as Mixed Captain and John Flux the Senior Captain. Winners of the day were, Ian Burn, Judith Sweet and Ian Forbes, fighting off any nearby claim for fame.   Captains cup played on April 9th, was won by Darrel Shovell, and with the new Ladies Cup now being played for on the same day, Julie Brooks has made her mark in this the competitions first year by being the clear winner. Now a bi-annual fixture, April 15 seen an away fixture defeat (6.5 – 1.5).   Mr & Mr Hodge showed off their talents, by winning the Easter bonnet on April 16th by a clear way from the Lady Captain and her husband in second place. The first leg of the Paragon trophy against Boringdon at home, seen a hard-fought draw of 5.5 – 5.5 being played on April 22; with the return second leg scheduled for August, where I know the lads will be wanting to retain the Cup, won last year.   Chris Brewer, Pete Hodgins, Darrel Shovell, Jim Carswell, Simon Schofield and Andrew Dance travelled to Perranporth for the County Weeks preliminary B Team championship, a six-man team event yielding handicaps of 0-12. The course played a strong part in the losing of this game 2-1, with Lanson capitalising on our ability to overcome.   Closing the busy start of the season was going to be the Ford Trophy (April 30), but alas the whilst the course can be prepared for most events, the weather cannot. The competition was abandoned and rescheduled for a later date in May (May 20th).   With the course in excellent condition and ever improving, as always, I think it is worth taking a moment to thanking the boys managed by Justin, and led by Dom. Our course just gets better and stronger, and I believe our increasing membership, popularity and regularly
