[Men's Golf] Men's Golf | Larken Whittemore leads Trevecca in Final Round @ NCAA Region

AXTELL, Neb.  – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's golf team completed play at the 2017 NCAA-II Central/Midwest Super Regional on Wednesday.

 

The team finished 20th at the 54-hole tournament with a final round team score of 297 resulting in a 299-289-297=885 tournament total. The 885 team score is the third best 54-hole total in program history.

 

Larken Whittemore shot a two-under 70 on Wednesday's final round pushing him to the low Trevecca individual score at the regional – 75-73-70=218. The 218 by Whittemore is the 13th best 54-hole total in program history.

 

All three rounds at the regional were at or lower than the Trojans record-setting 299.62 season scoring average.

 

Landon Cottrell's three-under par 69 in the second round is tied for the 12th best round in program history. It is the third time the 2017 Great Midwest Freshman of the Year has turned in a career-low 69. Those 69's were the low for any Trevecca golfer this season.

 

Landon Cottrell led the tournament with 41 pars.

On only nine occasions in the history of the program have the Trojans recorded a round lower than the 289 they recorded on Tuesday, but four of those were turned in by this year's team. The 588 through Tuesday's play is the eighth best 36-hole total in program history and is the fourth best this season.

 

Three teams were guaranteed to advance to the NCAA Championships, but four from the region qualified. They are - Central Missouri, ranked No-24 in NCAA D2, who won the region with a 272-278-281=831, Ferris State University rallied for second with a 283-283-270=836, Lindenwood University is third with a 279-277-282=838, and Arkansas Tech advanced with a 289-277-274=840. Two individuals advanced, Keenai Sampson, who was the tournament Medalist, of McKendree University (63-69-67=199) and DJ Vogt, who finished second overall, of Bellarmine University (69-63-69=201).

 

Payton Williams recorded an eagle Tuesday on the 424-yard par four #3.

The Awarii Dunes Golf Course (web) in Axtell, Neb. played to varying distances for each day, but played to a par of 72 each day.   

 

Trevecca qualified for the regional for the second time in just its third full season of NCAA Division II play. Trevecca, the 2017 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) champion, is the 10th seed in the Midwest, the Trojans are the only Great Midwest Athletic Conference team to make the field. Trevecca is the only school to win the men's or women's G-MAC title in the five-year history of the conference.

 

The three-day, 54-hole tournament, was hosted by the University of Nebraska Kearne.  

 

There were 10 teams and four individuals from the Midwest Region. Tiffin University, who will join the G-MAC in two seasons, is one of five GLIAC teams representing the Midwest in the field. Four GLVC teams to made the Midwest field. Missouri-St. Louis earned the top seed, with GLVC-champ Bellarmine and Maryville earning the fourth and eighth seeds, respectively. GLIAC-champ Grand Valley (2-seed) and G-MAC-champ Trevecca (10) round out the Midwest field.
 

The Central Region was made up of schools from the MIAA, NSIC (Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conf.) and GAC (Great American Conf.). The Midwest Region is represented by the GLVC (Great Lakes Valley Conf.)  GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conf.) and G-MAC (Great Midwest Athletic Conf.).

 

The NCAA selected 80 teams stretching across eight different regions to compete at the regional tournament level.

 

The 2017 NCAA-II Men's Golf Championships slated for May 22-26 at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Fla. The finals are hosted by the Sunshine State Conference and Central Florida Sports Commission.
