On only nine occasions in the history of the program have the Trojans recorded a round lower than 289, but four of those were turned in by this year's team. The 588 is the eighth best 36-hole total in program history and is the fourth best this season.
Director of Golf David Head said, "We played 10 strokes better today and yet did not gain any ground. While I am proud of the guys for working hard, even while here, to get more out of their game, but we actually fell further behind while improving our score. The guys all stepped up more today and Wednesday gives us another chance to improve and grow for next season."
Payton Williams leads the team again after 36 holes, but Landon Cottrell took the day with a three-under par 69. Williams sits even for the tournament with a 73-71=144. Cottrell is a stroke back at 145 after a opening round 76 and a 69 today.
The Trojans are 19th of 20 teams in the field after 36-holes of the 54-hoe NCAA regional. Central Missouri, ranked No-24 in NCAA D2, leads the region with a 272-278=550. Lindenwood University is second with a 279-277=556.
"This entire experience is a learning opportunity for this still young team. The motivation is easy when you turn in your season average on day one and see where it placed us in the region field. To put it even more in perspective, our season average this year is a school record. Then today we improve our score by 10 strokes and do not gain ground."
David Head continued, "Our record season with an incredibly young roster is only the tip of what these guys can do. The result here will speak volumes to them and help them see what we need to do now. We will work hard to not only earn this opportunity again, but be prepared to do more with it. The good news is we know we belong."
Payton Williams recorded an eagle today on the 424-yard par four #3. Williams turned in a one-under front with two birdies and the eagle. John Leverton has 27 pars which places him third in the field. Landon Cottrell turned in 26 pars and is tied for sixth in the field. Landon Cottrell shot three-under on the back nine today with three birdies over the last five holes and had just one bogie on the day.
Head said in conclusion, "We are going to work to improve again on Wednesday and then build on this season and trip to take another step forward next year. Every one of our five will return and then add in a red-shirt and new recruits to make us even stronger next year."
