Acceptance Minutes of Committee Meeting 9th January 2017 Matters arising. See AOB COURSE REPORT Working with Mother Nature and the jet stream. It’s been a busy month on the course, taking advantage of the mild spells. These growth windows are an excellent opportunity to carry out aeration and achieve quick recovery to the surfaces. Aeration and dressing operations need to be carried out to remove the soft dead organic matter (thatch) from the surface, we then exchange it with a firm free draining material (sand). In recent years the jet stream has been a little more unpredictable and therefore we need to work with Mother Nature rather than against her to obtain the best results for our turf. We aim to present the course in the best continue possible and therefore must take advantage of these weather windows, gaining maximum leverage from them. This is the earliest I have ever top dressed and cored but when the weather presents its self and the golfing calendar looks as full as ours it’s a must! Other tasks carried out this month include: – The new 2nd green has been lightly rolled to encourage tillering of growth and then hand dressed, in lower spots or animal scrapes, the back of the green has had the hollow tines from the greens applied to level out this area as top soil was thin in places and the irrigation boxes needed levelling out. The entrance to the green has been granular feed as well as the green then the whole area fenced off to keep animal out. We focused our efforts on hollow tyning and dressing the greens in the weather window of late February, a 24mm tine was used and 60 tonnes of sand put down, this was brushed in and then a granular early spring growth ferti put down to stimulate growth. All walkways and areas of stress have had a light feed and some wear areas have been top dressed as well. We have continued to carry out our winter overhaul of our golf course machinery. All the tees have been over seeded and then over 20 tonnes of sand brushed in to aid drainage and level the surface out from winter play. We continued topping up the bunkers which are short of sand. The hedge on the left hand side of the 15th has been lowered to allow for easier play and speed of the course. the area in front of the 17th tee is currently getting lowered as well. All the fairways and rough has been slit again in case of heavy spring rain. Divot all the par 3 tees. Help from the membership on the 27th was a bit of a miss as nobody turned up but we will again be asking for your help in the near future so watch this space for info. Statistics Rainfall for February 2017 = 96mm. GREENS will be mown at 5.5mm throughout the week TEES/ APRONS Will be mown twice weekly at 16mm. We may apply a granular fertilizer to encourage some spring growth FAIRWAYS will be mown weekly at 20mm, as and when needed SEMI ROUGH & SURROUNDS< PRIMARY ROUGH Will be mown weekly at 52mm and as growth dictates New SECOND GREEN Constant over seeding and rolling to encourage tillering of growth OTHER WORK we plan to complete the winter machinery overhauls, try to finish winter plan OTHER INFO DO YOUR BIT – Help minimize the wear and tear by avoiding taking your trolleys between the greens and the bunkers PLEASE – REPAIR ALL PITCH MARKS a pitch mark left unrepaired for 10 minutes or longer takes 15 days to recover, whereas a pitch mark repaired within 5 minutes recovers completely within 24 hours. The newly played competition “Meal for four” had good support with eleven pairs taking part and was won by Chris and Heather Eyles from Jim Carswell and James Gardner. On Sunday February 25th, a team of twenty players (ten pairs) went to The Point at Polzeath to play the first of this year’s matches. Captained by Les Jewell (Vice Darrel Shovell), The Point proved a little too strong for us on the day, winning 6.5 to 3.5. Playing two rookies in the match format, Peter Farrell and Andy Kirton; whilst narrowly defeated, I am informed they enjoyed their first selection and have subsequently made themselves available for selection of the Merlin game. Yesterday’s Senior Captain vs Club Captain match was played in the format of singles stableford, with the highest collective points winning. In this additional fixture, the Club Captain was triumphed with glory scoring 81 points to 73. This was a game scheduled due to the exit of the Frank Wills squad from the winter CGU event, and subsequently not having to play in the final scheduled for the same Sunday The winter league competition is still running, finishing March 31st, with leading scores now available from the board and via FB. Delighted with the level of entries this year, and as expected, some consistent scores making for interesting reading. County ways Jim Carswell. Darrel Shovell, Peter Hodgins, Ryan Bowers and Chris Brewer have been asked to represent the Club on May 7th in The CGU Closed Championships. In an event rewarding Trethorne for all its hard work
