Pierce Purcell / JB Carr
Comer had a sensational victory over Gowran Park GC in the Pierce Purcell Trophy. With two pairings away and two at home but with an away draw, the odds were heavily stacked in favour of a battle hardened and experienced Gowran team. Nevertheless, the ‘Comer men are not for turning and they displayed the resilience in the face of adversity in these club matches that Castlecomer GC is now becoming renowned for. Away matches are crucial in this new format, which hopefully will be shelved when the GUI comes to its senses, and the pairing of Peter Mulhall and Andy Cleere secured a crucial point away, the other duo of Colm Meagher and Keith O’ Neill were desperately unlucky to lose on 18. At home the pairing of Nicky Walsh and Josh Kelly won in a hard fought match, with young gun Josh holing the winning putt on 16, Liam Downey and John Holohan secured the win courtesy of being dormie four.
