Women’s golf earns historic Stanford Intercollegiate win

The Cardinal opened the fall season at home with a convincing showing during the Stanford Intercollegiate at the Stanford Golf Course. The tournament — hosted by director of the Hoover Institution and senior fellow on public policy Condoleezza Rice — helps raise money for breast cancer research through the initiative PlayForHer.   

In the first round, Stanford turned in a program-record 13-under-par team round, leading the field by six strokes as they moved to day two of the tournament. Notable rounds included: junior Paula Martín Sampedro’s 66 (-5), sophomore Meja Örtengren’s 67 (-4), along with great performances from senior Megha Ganne and sophomore Andrea Revuelta.

By the end of round two, Stanford stretched their lead and was playing ahead of the women’s team course record. Through two rounds they were in good shape, with senior Kelly Xu firing a 67 (-4) and Ganne coming in with a 68 (-3) to elevate their individual standings. As a team, the Cardinal had a double-digit lead over the rest of the field.

After the conclusion of Sunday’s final round, the team finished the tournament out with a total score of 817 (–35) for a new women’s team record on their home course and finished 19 strokes ahead of second-place Oregon. On the individual side, Ganne followed up her sensational first two rounds with a composed final round of 66 (–5) for an overall score of 10 under par, winning the individual title for her third collegiate victory.

The Cardinal is in a great position for the rest of the season with momentum, strength at home and good depth throughout their roster. The mixture of veterans and good rounds throughout the lineup indicates they are on the right path to avenging their loss in the National Championship last season.
