Paul Cahill Captains Prize

0 131

The Men’s Captain’s Day at Greystones Golf Club, played over the first two weekends of July, brought glorious sunshine, sizzling golf, and a nail-biting finish that kept the whole club talking for days. Played under the Stableford format, the event drew a huge field. 277 players over the opening weekend of July 4th–5th, followed by another 208 competitors on July 11th–12th, before culminating in a high-stakes showdown for the overall prizes.

The format was simple but dramatic: prizes for each weekend separately, class prizes for different handicap divisions, and then the big one, the combined scores across both weekends to decide the Captain’s Day champion.

The first weekend was all about setting the tone, and it didn’t disappoint. The scoring was red-hot, with Eoin Mullen firing a stunning 42 points to top the leaderboard after the opening round, closely followed by Barry G. Walsh on 41. A clutch of players sat just behind on 40, including Ray Houlden, Ian Kelly, and Brendan Sweeney, all keeping themselves right in contention for the second weekend.

With only the top 30 from the opening weekend progressing to the final Saturday in reverse order, it was perfectly set up for fireworks. As one onlooker quoted, “It’s like the back nine on Masters Sunday, anything can happen.”

Weekend One prizes were awarded across multiple handicap classes, ensuring everyone had something to play for, from low single figures right through to the higher handicaps.

As the second weekend rolled around, the weather stayed perfect, the fairways baked firm, and the greens running pure. Those chasing the overall title knew exactly what they needed, but delivering under pressure was another matter entirely.

Alan Meehan, starting from mid-pack after 36 points on the first weekend, produced the round of the tournament with a scintillating 42 points on the final Saturday to storm to the top of the leaderboard. His two-round total of 78 points was enough to crown him the 2025 Men’s Captain’s Day winner a sensational closing charge worthy of the title.

Behind him, the drama intensified as three players Tom Byrne (34+41), Michael Joyce (36+39), and Simon Fawsitt (38+37) all tied on 75 points. The countback system gave Byrne second place and Joyce third, with Fawsitt settling for fourth despite leading the first weekend at one point.

Alan Condren, off a scratch handicap, delivered a brilliant 73 points to take both the Gross Prize and the Frazer Cup, while Nigel Sylvester and early leader Ray Houlden rounded out the top six after solid performances across both weekends.

As with weekend one, weekend two also featured class prizes for every handicap division, keeping the competition alive for players across the board right until the final putt dropped.
