Victory for Elderslie in the Semi-final

0 3

Monday saw the Newton Shield semi-final take place between Elderslie and Greenock.

Despite having a home advantage, there would be no guarantee of a win for Elderslie against Greenock, who finished second in their league behind Erskine.

The gents team comprised of Mark McVeigh, Rhys McIlroy, Ethan Lang, Jim McDonald, Jack Tourish, Conor O’Hagan, Robbie McLeod and Steven Leckie.

At the turn, it was looking like it could have gone either way, with each team having players up and the remaining games close to all square.

Rhys McIlroy and Jack Tourish clinched the first wins of the night, winning 1 up and 5 & 4, respectively. This was followed by a 2 & 1 win for Ethan Lang and a 5 & 3 win for Steven Leckie. Jim McDonald sealed the night for Elderslie with a hard-fought 1-up win on 18 after being 3 down after 11 holes.

Special mention to Mark McVeigh, who also had a hole-in-one on the 2nd hole.

The Gents team now proceeds to the final on Friday against Erskine, who beat Kilmacolm 5-3 in their semi-final on Monday night. The final will be played at Greenock Golf Club, with the first tee-off time scheduled for 5:00 pm.

The Gents team would once again like to thank members for their support in the semi-final.

If you’re free on Friday night, then be sure to pop down to Greenock Golf Club to support the Gents team in what will be a fantastic final.
