Don Hearn, CGCS, inducted into the Massachusetts Golf Hall of Fame
Hearn’s journey began as a caddie at Woburn Country Club and culminated in his certification as a Golf Course Superintendent in 1977. He managed renowned facilities such as Weston Golf Club and Vesper Country Club, where he implemented best practices that set benchmarks for turf management and environmental stewardship.
Hearn’s influence extended beyond individual courses. As president of both the Golf Course Superintendents Association of New England (GCSANE) and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), he helped oversee the construction of the GCSAA’s headquarters, a move that centralized industry resources and education.
During his tenure as GCSANE’s executive director from 2011 to 2024, Hearn championed professional development, mentorship and sustainability. He played a pivotal role in developing Massachusetts’ first Best Management Practice guide for golf courses, standardizing environmental protocols statewide and influencing similar initiatives nationwide.
Hearn’s dedication has been recognized with the GCSAA Col. John Morley Distinguished Service Award, the USGA Ike Grainger Award for 25 years of service and the renaming of GCSANE’s Distinguished Service Award in his honor. His advocacy has helped elevate the superintendent’s role, highlighting its importance in both playability and environmental responsibility.
The Massachusetts Golf Hall of Fame will induct its largest class yet this October, coinciding with the 125th anniversary of Mass Golf. Seven individuals, each recognized for significant contributions to the sport, will join the Hall at a ceremony on October 16, 2025, at Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton, Mass.
