Course of the Week: El Macero Country Club begins renovation
Our featured course of the week is El Macero Country Club in El Macero, Calif., which has initiated a multi-million-dollar renovation of its golf course that aims to modernize playability and sustainability. The project, which began on April 21 and is scheduled for completion by late August, is managed by Golf Plan Dale and Ramsey Golf Course Architecture and DHR Golf Construction.
The renovation targets all 18 green complexes, softening contours to improve drainage and reduce water pooling. Greens will be resurfaced with TifTuf hybrid bermudagrass, recognized for its drought tolerance and low maintenance, while bentgrass will be installed on the collars. Bunker space will be reduced by 60 percent, with updated drainage and access points to enhance both aesthetics and maintenance efficiency.
Chris Johnson, general manager at El Macero Country Club, said the changes are designed to offer members new shot options and improved turf conditions year-round. The decision to use TifTuf aligns with broader industry trends as golf facilities increasingly prioritize water conservation and course sustainability, especially in drought-prone regions like California.
In addition to course improvements, the club will soon break ground on a four-court pickleball complex, expected to open by early September. The addition reflects the growing popularity of pickleball nationwide and the club’s effort to diversify its amenities.
Founded in 1961 and managed by Troon Golf, El Macero Country Club has a history of hosting notable figures, including Tiger Woods and Byron Nelson. The renovation underscores a broader movement among private clubs to invest in infrastructure, according to the course.
