THE Zimbabwean golf fraternity has been plunged into deep mourning following the sudden and tragic death of professional golfer Morton Kombai, who died in a horrific car crash just hours after teeing off at the prestigious 2025 FBC Zimbabwe Open.
Kombai, a much-loved figure on the local circuit and a proud representative of Rolland Park Golf Club in Zvishavane, died on the spot after a vehicle carrying him and four other golfers crashed at the intersection of Samora Machel Avenue and Seventh Street in Harare late Sunday evening.
The accident occurred shortly after the close of the tournament, turning what had been a celebration of golf excellence into a scene of national grief.
“We are heartbroken to confirm the passing of Morton Kombai, a respected member of the Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association (ZPGA), who died on the scene,” said the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) and the Zim Open Committee in a joint statement.
Fellow golfers involved in the crash include:
* Tonderai Masunga (Zimbabwe)
* Biggie Chibvuri (Zimbabwe – also the driver)
* Victor Kachepatsonga (Malawi)
* Lucky Ayisa (Ghana)
The full extent of their injuries is yet to be officially confirmed, but sources say the scene was devastating, with bystanders and rescue teams struggling to contain their emotions.
Kombai, known for his quiet demeanor, unshakable focus, and pure passion for the game, leaves behind a grieving wife and two children. His death comes as a crushing blow not just to the golfing world but to all Zimbabwean sport.
“He was known not only for his talent on the course but also for his humility, dedication, and love for the game,” the statement read.
“We salute all five players for their commitment to the sport and the spirit they brought to the 2025 tournament.”
B-Metro understands that Kombai had just recorded one of his most promising rounds of the season and had plans to enter regional tournaments this year. Friends describe him as a “quiet warrior with a golden swing.”
Golfers and fans across Zimbabwe have since taken to social media to express their sorrow and disbelief, with the hashtag #FarewellKombai trending.
B-Metro Verdict:
From the fairways to final goodbyes — Zimbabwean sport has lost a gem. Kombai didn’t just play golf, he lived it. Rest easy, champ. The 19th hole awaits you.
