Tolls for Cape Cod bridges? Proposal resurfaces during town meeting

Should tolls be collected from motorists who cross the bridges to Cape Cod to raise money in support of infrastructure and environmental projects?David Weeden, vice chair of the Mashpee Select Board, proposed the idea of charging tolls for vehicles crossing the Bourne and Sagamore bridges during a meeting this week. "I think we could generate a lot of money towards helping the local Cape Cod communities address the lack of infrastructure. We're all facing it. We're all recognizing the environment needs help," he said. Weeden suggested that even a modest toll could raise millions for the region. "There's over 35 million cars, vehicles that come across those two bridges combined annually. Even if you did $2 an axle, only calculating cars, you'd bring in about $70 million a year," Weeden said Monday.
