Westlake wins UIL 6A boys golf title after one round due to rain, course conditions

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Westlake claimed its 14th state title in a rain-shortened UIL Class 6A boys golf championship Tuesday at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.

To avoid forecasted storms Tuesday, tournament officials decided the field would play both rounds Monday. That would have worked except it rained just as hard, if not harder, on Monday than it did Tuesday. Golfers completed the first round and three holes of the second before play was suspended, and with more rain Tuesday morning, course conditions deteriorated to the point that officials canceled the second round.

For the Chaparrals, that meant another state title. Westlake shot an even-par 288, 11 shots clear of runner-up Houston Memorial. Lake Travis finished a shot behind the Mustangs in third place. The Woodlands finished fourth at 20-over and Schertz Clemens shot 21-over to round out the top five.

Conrow Grand Oaks junior Asher Vargas won the individual state championship, firing a 3-under 69. He birdied three of the course's four par-5 holes, plus Nos. 1 and 10. He had two bogeys in his round.

Austin junior Sterling Hurd finished second at 2-under with five birdies and an eagle on No. 2, but five bogeys hurt him. Teammate senior Adam Villanueva finished third at 1-under with four birdies and an eagle on No. 10, but a double bogey on No. 6 with three other bogeys put him a shot behind. Lake Travis senior Tyler Neidel finished tied for sixth at 1-over.

Prosper Walnut Grove won the 5A championship at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown. Sonora won the 2A title at Lions Municipal in Austin and Wildorado won the 1A crown at Crystal Falls in Leander. All of those tournaments were shortened to 18 holes due to weather.

Classes 4A and 3A tournaments completed both rounds. Bridgeport won the 4A tournament at Legends Golf Club in Kingsland while Wall claimed the 3A crown at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.
