Sheriff investigating Jeff Sperbeck’s death after he fell off golf cart John Elway was driving in California

0 1

A California sheriff’s office is investigating the death of sports agent Jeff Sperbeck after he fell from a golf cart driven by former Denver Broncos quarterback and Hall of Famer John Elway on Saturday.

Sperbeck, 62, rolled and hit his head on the asphalt when he fell off the cart in a private California golf community, according to TMZ.

Paramedics took Sperbeck to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs and he was put on life support before he was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.

Elway and Sperbeck were longtime friends and business partners, and the two men and their wives and Elway’s son had reportedly been at the Stagecoach music festival earlier in the day and were leaving a post-party when the fall happened.

No one else was injured in the incident.

In a statement to The Denver Post, Elway said he was devastated and heartbroken by Sperbeck’s passing.

“There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me,” Elway said. “…Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.”

Elway’s statement did not address the circumstances of Sperbeck’s death.

Sheriff’s officials confirmed Wednesday they are investigating the case and were first told about Sperbeck’s fall on Monday. The agency declined to release additional information and did not confirm Elway’s involvement or whether foul play is suspected, citing the ongoing investigation.

The incident happened in the 53000 block of Humboldt Boulevard in La Quinta, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. That address matches The Madison Club, an ultra-exclusive country club and neighborhood with celebrity homeowners including Elway, Adele, Apple CEO Tim Cook, the Kardashians and pro golfer Fred Couples, according to Forbes.

Sperbeck, who lived in San Clemente, represented Elway during his playing career, and the pair launched 7Cellars winery in 2013. He is survived by his wife, Cori; and three children, Carly, Sam and Jackson.
