As Earth Day approaches, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) has opened its annual Rounds 4 Research auction, offering golfers the chance to play at renowned courses while directly funding scientific research and sustainability programs. The online auction, open through April 27, features more than 1,600 rounds at courses across 46 states, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Portugal and Switzerland, including sought-after destinations like Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, Dismal River Club and Nanea Golf Club.

Rounds 4 Research has raised more than $4 million since inception. Proceeds support the GCSAA Foundation’s mission to advance turfgrass research, best management practices and environmental stewardship. This research addresses pressing industry challenges such as water conservation, biodiversity and pollution prevention, issues that are increasingly relevant as environmental regulations and climate pressures intensify, according to the association.

Golf courses face mounting scrutiny over resource use and ecological impact. Recent trends highlight the need for integrated pest management, water quality monitoring and energy conservation. According to the GCSAA, research funded by programs like Rounds 4 Research has contributed to significant industry advancements, including a 29 percent reduction in water use over the past two decades. These efforts not only benefit superintendents and course operators, but also help preserve the game’s future by demonstrating golf’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

As the auction continues, new rounds are being added, giving golfers more opportunities to participate. Stakeholders across the industry — from avid players to course managers — have a role in supporting research that ensures golf remains both enjoyable and environmentally sustainable.
