April Course Update: Springing Into Action

As we move into April, there’s a lot happening out on the course—from fertilization and sod work to some exciting beautification projects.

March in Review

March was a productive and successful month, with a strong focus on improving greens health as we transitioned from winter into spring. Thanks to favorable conditions and diligent maintenance, we’re entering April in a great position.

Early Verticutting on Greens

We’ve already begun verticutting our greens—earlier than usual for our area. This process involves swapping the reels on our greens mowers for vertical cutting heads. These specialized blades cut into the turf vertically, removing excess thatch and improving grain and ball roll.

Following the verticutting, we applied 12-0-16 fertilizer. For context, fertilizer numbers refer to the N-P-K ratio:

  • N (Nitrogen) – 12% total: 75% quick-release and 25% slow-release

    • 9% of this is ammoniacal, offering an immediate boost

    • 3% is urea, providing long-term support

  • K (Potash) – 16%: Promotes strong root development and overall plant health

This balanced fertilizer blend encourages both top growth (leaf blades) and robust root systems—key to healthy, thriving turf.

Sod Work & Repairs

This week, new sod is arriving to repair several areas across the course. Some are the result of tree removals; others stem from drainage concerns. This initial round of sod work will make a noticeable difference, and we’ll continue improving other areas throughout the year.

We’re also receiving greens-grade TifEagle sod to repair thin or damaged spots on holes #2 and #14. Please take relief from these areas while they establish and blend in with the rest of the greens.

New Equipment & Beautification

Last month, we purchased a mini excavator—a game-changer for course maintenance. It will be used for everything from irrigation and drainage repair to beautification efforts.

Coming soon: new ornamental beds in areas where turf struggles to grow. Some will enhance previously bare beds, while others will introduce fresh color and visual interest throughout the course.

Looking Ahead

Spring has been a strong season for turf transition, and we’re excited about the progress being made. As always, we appreciate your help in keeping the course in top shape.
Rake bunkers after use
Sand your divots
Repair ball marks

These small steps go a long way in maintaining excellent playing conditions for everyone.

We look forward to seeing you out on the course—here’s to a great year ahead!
