Course of the Week: Indian Wells breaks ground on Players Course renovation
Indian Wells (Calif.) Golf Resort officially broke ground on the renovation of its Players Course on March 5. Golf course architect John Fought is leading the project, which will involve rerouting multiple holes.
The Players Course at Indian Wells will transform from a par-72 into a par-71. The key hole transformations include shifting the finishing par-3 17th and par-4 18th to the other side of the whitewater rush running through the property. The holes will be reconnected to the rest of the track on the north side of the wash. The par-5 9th hole will also be moved closer to the clubhouse to improve speed at the turn for those who wish to refuel at the stop.
In addition to the rerouting on some holes, the renovation will also include an update of bunkers, tee boxes and greens on each hole.
“We are excited that one of the country’s best public golf courses is about to become even better,” says Robin Graf, general manager of Indian Wells Golf Resort. “It’s been a pleasure working with Fought and his team to realize the incredible possibilities for this project, and we can’t wait to welcome our residents and guests from around the world to experience the new design later this year.”
According to the club, the planned changes will enhance the playability of the course while also preparing the layout for its future role as host of professional golf championships.
“We are looking forward to enhancing one of the great municipal golf courses in the U.S.,” says Fought. “The Players Course will become a true championship layout that will test the best players in the game as well as provide a wonderful experience for golfers of all skill levels.”
