Canadian Agronomist, Teri Yamada, dies at 66
Teri Yamada of Collingwood, Ont. passed away peacefully on Jan. 8, 2025, at the age of 66.
Yamada was an influential figure in Canadian Golf for nearly 40 years. She spent 18 years with the Royal Canadian Golf Association (now Golf Canada) in multiple leadership positions. Most recently on Golf Canada’s Board of Directors.
Over the last 16 years, she owned and operated TY Environmental Strategic Ltd. which supported the use of science to minimize golf courses environmental impact. Her impact was felt in the agronomic and business analysis of golf course operations, government relations, industry communication and interpreting complex scientific information.
Yamada was not only influential in the Canadian turfgrass industry but her work was respected globally with invitations to participate in the development of the Environmental Principles for Golf Courses in the United States and was referenced in An Environmental Strategy for Golf in Europe.
Yamada graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Science (Agriculture and Environmental Horticulture). Yamada was a passionate golfer and was one of three Canadian women members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St. Andrews, Scotland.
