15-year-old Chen Xingtong put herself in a commanding position to secure her spot at next month’s HSBC Women’s World Championship after posting a two-under-par 70 to lead the two-day national qualifying tournament on Wednesday.
Chen, a national squad member of the Singapore Golf Association (SGA), marked her card with three birdies and one bogey to establish a three-shot lead over five of her other compatriots, including Aloysa Atienza (73), Jaymie Ng (78), Aamiya Koul (79), Passion Hsu (80) and Amelie Ng (86) at the Sentosa Golf Club.
“It was a pretty good round for me today. I played steadily and didn’t make many bogeys which is always good. It was also nice to be able to sink a 30-footer at the last hole to save par. That gives you confidence. I’ve to continue doing the same thing again tomorrow and hopefully, it all turns out well,” said Chen.
Chen made her debut at the Singapore showpiece last year where she got to play alongside major winner and LPGA Hall of Famer Lydia Ko in the second round and even got the opportunity to conduct a clinic with her role model Annika Sorenstam.
“I’m definitely hoping to qualify again this year as it’s a great tournament and the experience of just being able to compete with the world’s best players is simply amazing,” added Chen.
The Tanjong course at Sentosa Golf Club, which is hosting the national qualifying tournament, will welcome the return of the world’s best golfers, including major winners Ko, Ruoning Yin, Ko Jin-young and defending champion Hannah Green when the event gets underway from February 27- March 2, 2025.
