October 6: Ryan Ang closed the chapter on his amateur career by signing off with a tied-13th finish at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) – his best result in three appearances at the region’s most prestigious amateur golf tournament.

The 25-year-old will now turn his attention to joining the paid ranks and will tee up at next week’s WA PGA Championship as a professional on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia.

“I’m pretty excited to play professional golf now. The Australian season starts immediately after AAC with its first event and it makes sense to kick start my professional career as I have my full tour card there. I just try to make the transition as seamless as it is.

“Hopefully, the success I have in amateur golf will translate to pro golf. My goal will be to keep my card on the Australian tour and try to qualify for the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour. Ultimately, it is also to play in the 2026 Asian Games and the Olympics

“There will always be pressure of making the cut as a pro but that’s the same as an amateur. My mindset wouldn’t shift as much. I try to keep the process, the team and structure as constant as possible so that it feels the same. I don’t want it to feel like it’s a different ball game. Ultimately, I’m still playing 72 holes and trying to win golf tournaments,” said Ang.

After rounds of 69, 74, 68, Ang walked off from the Taiheiyo Club with his best score of a blemish-free three-under-par 67.

With inclement weather disrupting play over the last two days, Ang returned to complete a marathon 26 holes on Sunday where he eventually signed for a four-day total of two-under-par 278 – 10 shots behind Chinese champion, Ding Wenyi.

“Final round was a very long one as I had to play 26 holes today. But I’m happy with how I managed myself, stayed disciplined and how I stuck closely to my game plan,” said Ang.

Meanwhile, Brayden Lee also had a round to remember as like Ang, he also signed off with his best round of a 68 for a tied-32nd finish.

“I had a decent final round which is far better than all my previous rounds. But overall, it has been a great experience at the AAC for me,” said the 17-year-old.
