October 3: Ryan Ang spearheaded Singapore’s charge at this week’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship by carding a one-under-par 69 to end the first round in tied-16th place, four shots back of Indonesian leader, Randy Bintang.

Ang, 25, is hoping to make his third appearance at the region’s premier amateur tournament count after finishing tied-19 and tied-41st respectively in the 2023 and 2022 editions.

Teeing off against the majestic views of Mount Fiji at the Taiheyo Club Gotemba in Japan on the back-nine 10, Ang traded three bogeys against three birdies for an outward 35.

He birdied hole three, dropped another shot on four before birdieing the fifth hole. Ang then made four straight pars from the sixth hole to return with a 69.

“Overall, it was not my best game. But I’m glad I managed to grind it out and post a respectable score. I had a lot of trust in my putting and wedges today. I‘m glad it paid off. I hit the ball generally well. I know my iron shots are okay.

“I need to spend more time reading the wind better off the tee so that I can trust my iron and second shots a bit more and put a good swing on it. Apart from that, my game is pretty solid and I hope it continues to stay that way,” said Ang.

Debutants Brayden Lee posted a 72 to end day one in tied-45th place while Troy Storm signed for a 75 and a share of 69th place.

Ends.
