Simplify Speed Development – Khary Mitchell

Khary Mitchell from 1000 Rounds of Golf simplifies swing speed development with 3 keys to focus on and a drill.

Focus on Through the Ball: Emphasize moving through the ball rather than just at it. Extend your range of motion to allow the clubhead to move faster, leading to higher and longer shots.

Core Engagement: Speed up your hips to create a slingshot effect with your arms. This involves thinking about faster hip movement to drive the arms and club head through the swing more effectively.

Right Pocket Focus: Try to get your right pocket toward the ball before your right hand makes contact. This helps increase swing speed by leveraging big muscles sooner.

Overall, focus on extending range of motion and engaging core muscles to increase swing speed!

Increase Clubhead Speed – Jon Watts

Jon Watts from the True Golf Academy offers four tips for increasing club head speed and driving distance.

Bigger Backswing: To generate more power, focus on making a larger backswing. Move the club further away from the ball while maintaining your posture.

Coil and Rotation: Create a bigger coil by allowing your hips and torso to rotate more. This involves letting your hips open up to support more torso rotation, which can vary based on flexibility and physical limitations.

Drill for Back Angle: Use an alignment stick placed near your trail thigh to ensure your shoulders rotate to or beyond the stick’s position, while keeping your spine angle consistent. This helps in loading your trail side correctly.

Practice and Measurement: After practicing with the alignment stick, measure your clubhead speed and ball speed. Aim for higher speeds to confirm improved efficiency and distance.

High Speed on Balance – Libby Smith

Libby provides tips for hitting longer, straighter golf shots with maximum speed and balance with five tips!

Avoid Over-Swinging: Focus on hitting the ball with speed while maintaining balance. Practice with a “woosh” sound and a balanced finish to avoid slowing down subconsciously.

Proper Setup and Posture: Start with correct posture by locking your knees and placing a shaft along your thighs to achieve the right hip hinge and spine angle. Ensure your arms hang naturally under your shoulders, and your hips are over your ankles to establish a strong power position.

Driver Setup: Position the driver with its natural loft, aligned with your front foot, and ensure your body is properly aligned with the club for optimal power.

Swing Fundamentals: Focus on three key elements—setup, takeaway, and follow-through. Keep your head centered, eyes on the ball, and load up pressure on your back foot by turning your front shoulder under your chin.

Practice and Execution: Nail your setup, load up correctly, and finish with a strong, balanced follow-through, tapping your back toe for emphasis. This technique should help you achieve high clubhead speed and effective ball striking.

Create More Clubhead Speed – Peter Stern

Peter discusses strategies for increasing clubhead speed and, consequently, golf distance. He also provides a drill to help you get faster.

Importance of Contact: Emphasizes that solid, center-face contact is crucial for maximizing distance. Even slight deviations from the sweet spot can result in lost distance.

Creating Clubhead Speed: Focuses on generating speed at impact rather than swinging excessively hard. Effective distance comes from proper power creation and release.

Power Creation and Release: Power is built during the backswing by extending the arms and hinging the wrists. During the downswing, the goal is to store and then release this power efficiently by keeping the wrists hinged and allowing the club to whip through the impact zone.

The key takeaway is to create power correctly, store it, and release it effectively to increase clubhead speed and distance.
