Tan makes move with an improved 70
Shannon Tan stuck closely to her game plan and was duly rewarded when she moved 13 places up to tied-36th place after signing for a second round two-under-par 70 at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on Thursday.
It was a marked improvement from her opening 78 where the thick rough around the 6,374 yard par-72 course prevented the 20-year-old from signing for a lower score at Le Golf National.
The favourable pins positions today, however, allowed Tan to mark her card with three birdies on holes one, 15 and 18 against a lone bogey on 10 where her tee shot found the water but she recovered well after hitting a good chip from the rough to five-feet before making putt for a bogey-five.
“The course conditions were rather similar to yesterday- thick rough and firm greens. I thought that some of the pins were a little easier and there were not many tucked pins,” said Tan, who hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation to compile a two-day total of four-over-par 148.
“The game plan was to keep the ball in play and keep it simple – fairways and greens. The rough out here is really thick so keeping it on the fairway is key. There were a few holes where I had to hit three-wood just to make sure I was able to hit the fairway and accept that I’ll have a longer club for my second shot.”
Switzerland’s Morgane Metraux took the halfway lead after signing for a 66 where she enjoyed a spectacular front-nine of 28. China’s Yin Ruoning carded a bogey-free 65 to stay a single shot back of Metraux while former World No. 1 New Zealander Lydia Ko- the only golfer to win multiple Olympic individual medals, returned with a 67 to take outright third place.
