The final golf major of the year is here, and it brings with it more than 150 years of history. We'll show you everything you need to know about how to watch the Open Championship, including cable and live streaming options. Plus, we'll highlight notable tee times for the coming days.

The Open Championship originated in 1860 in Scotland, making it the oldest golf tournament in the world, but it has shifted to various courses in the UK over the years. This year's competition is back in Scotland, taking place at the Royal Troon Golf Club from July 18 to 21. American Brian Harman won the competition last year and has returned for 2024 to defend his title. Other notable golfers partaking in this year's competition include Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Tiger Woods.

The tournament kicked off with Round 1 on Thursday, and Round 2 picks back up on Friday. After that, the top 70 players will make the cut and proceed to the final two rounds this weekend. Keep reading to learn how to watch the Open Championship from anywhere.

How to watch the Open Championship in the US

The Open Championship is spread across various NBCUniversal options in the US. USA will air Rounds 1 and 2, while Peacock and NBC will carry Rounds 3 and 4. USA will also offer some early coverage over the weekend. The cheapest option for catching top featured groups for the whole tournament will be through Peacock, which costs $5.99 a month. This option will also cover you for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

If you'd rather explore a more elaborate live TV package that can serve as a cable alternative, there are a couple of services that can help you out today. Sling TV is one solid option and by far one of the more affordable live TV packages out there. The Sling Blue carries NBC and USA, although Sling's local channel coverage is fairly selective, so you should look up your zip code before subscribing to ensure you can access NBC. Subscriptions cost $40 a month, but Sling is currently offering a promo that will give new users their first month for just $15. This is the lowest we've seen Sling's first-month discount promotion go in quite some time.

If you want even more live TV channels (including NBC and USA), we recommend Fubo. At $79.99 a month, it's definitely a more expensive live TV package, but it's super sports-friendly and comes with over 180 channels. On the fence about susbcribing? New users can get a one-week free trial of the service.

How to watch the Open Championship in the UK

Open Championship coverage will air on Sky Sports in the UK. Subscriptions vary from plan to plan, but British golf fans can also catch the stream through Now TV. Now offers a more relaxed, month-to-month subscription option. You can access Sky Sports through Now's Sports membership, which typically costs £34.99 a month, but you can currently get your first six months for £26. If you're looking for even less commitment, you can try out Now's Day Membership, which gives you access for 24 hours for just £14.99, which is a solid option for someone just hoping to tune into one day of action.

How to watch the Open Championship from anywhere

Golf fans who will be traveling away from home at any point during the championship can still tune in to their subscriptions using a VPN. Short for virtual private networks, VPNs allow you to temporarily alter your electronic viewing device's virtual location, which means you can keep up with your usual websites and apps from anywhere. They're also solid ways to boost your online privacy, even if you're not traveling abroad. If this sounds like something that might be a good fit, our go-to recommendation is ExpressVPN, since it's a straightforward option with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Check out our ExpressVPN review for additional details.

Note: The use of VPNs is illegal in certain countries, and using VPNs to access region-locked streaming content might constitute a breach of the terms of use for certain services. Insider does not endorse or condone the illegal use of VPNs.
