AUSTIN (KXAN) — After winning the UIL Class 6A boys golf championship in April, the Lake Travis Cavaliers finished fourth at the 2024 PGA High School National Golf Invitational at PGA Frisco in Frisco, Texas.

Cavs head coach Dustin Payne said as soon as he got an email inviting the team to the national tournament, the kids couldn't get their bags ready fast enough.

"It's such a great honor," Payne said. "As soon as I asked the kids if they wanted to go, they jumped all over it and wanted to see what they could do."

Lake Travis finished the three-round tournament with a score of 1-over 865 (276-294-295) and played both courses at the PGA complex and one in McKinney. Mackey Bennett posted a 3-under 213 to tie for 19th place for LAke Travis' best score of the tournament. Bennett fired an opening-round 68 then followed it with a 73 on the second day and 72 to close it out. He eagled the par-5 18th to finish his third round birdie-birdie-eagle.

Along with Bennett, Elijah Galvan, Bennett Kuhns, Jack Watters and Luke Nolan represented Lake Travis at the tournament. The Cavs finished six shots ahead of Utah and topped Bridgeport, the other Texas team in the tournament, who won the 4A state title.

Wimberley's Jaxon Donaldson qualified as an individual and shot a 1-over 217 to tie for 41st.

Vandegrift will play in the girls tournament that begins July 8.
