Golf tips, free bets and latest odds for The Charles Schwab Challenge

0 7

Scottie Scheffler showed just how much this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge means to him, by getting his lawyer to switch his court appearance in Kentucky from Tuesday to June 3.

The Charles Schwab is played at Colonial, just a few miles from Scheffler’s home in Dallas, and it is one of the first events he highlights on his calendar.

The bookmakers have taken the hint, and they have installed the world No 1 as a red hot 3-1 favourite.

But Scheffler’s shock arrest for swerving around a road barrier at the USPGA – and allegedly assaulting a policeman who tried to stop him – must be playing on the God-fearing family man’s mind.

He admitted he was “not himself” when he stumbled to a two over par 73 in the third round  at Valhalla, ending his incredible streak of 42 consecutive rounds at par or better, and wrecking his chances of a third Major title.

Scheffler has finished second and third in his last two starts at Colonial, and if he has a clear head he could easily get the elusive ‘home’ win.  But there are enough doubts to look for better value elsewhere.

How to bet on golf

Here are five easy steps for beginners.

1. Choose Your Favourite Sportsbook – there are plenty to choose from and most have their own app or mobile site.

2. Make a Deposit – each sportsbook will walk you through how to connect your bank account to their system including providing a list of all the safeguards they have set up to ensure the safety of your transactions.

3. Claim Your Bonuses – most sportsbooks offers bonuses to first time bettors in the form of free bets.

4. Place Your Bet – now it’s time to navigate through your sportsbook’s odds where they will offer a variety of options including outright winners, or top finishing positions, such as top 10 or 20, or even to make the cut. For the event this week each way odds are generally paid on the top eight players.

5. Collect Your Winnings – If you’re successful you will be able to withdraw your winnings once the bet is complete. Some bookmakers offer cashout options on certain bets as well, which is worth keeping an eye on.

Charles Schwab Challenge 2024 betting tips

Collin Morikawa is close to recapturing the form that won him two Majors in quick succession as a relative rookie, and is the 12-1 second favourite on most lists.

That looks pretty good value, as he showed he likes this course when he almost made a winning debut four years ago. He  was beaten in a play-off by Daniel Berger, who was a hot property at the time.

Throw in the fact that Morikawa has finished third and fourth in the two Majors so far this year, and a win is surely just around the corner.

Jordan Spieth is priced up at 22-1, and that also looks reasonable for a Texan who HAS won here – and finished second on three occasions. If only he wasn’t so infuriatingly erratic at the moment.

Max Homa can also be backed at 22-1, and out of the two of them I prefer the man from California.

Homa never really got going at the USPGA, but he has finished third at the Masters and eighth at the Wells Fargo in the past few weeks.

Add in a top ten here last year and his odds just about make him worthy of each way support.

Among the outsiders, Tom Hoge jumps out at 50-1. He has been a model of consistency this year, and there were times when he looked likely to do a lot better at the USPGA than his finishing position of tied 23rd.

The same could be said of 60-1 shot Austin Eckroat. He was in a strong position at 11 under par after three rounds, but was stuck in neutral for most of the final round, and had to settle for a share of 18th.

But Eckroat, 25, is definitely a player on  the way up. He managed a top twenty finish at Colonial when he made his debut here a year ago, and he will know more about it this time.

Mark Hubbard registered at top ten at last year’s Charles Schwab, and he also played well enough at Valhalla to make odds of 80-1 look tempting.

And if you are looking for a player at three figure odds, look no further than Robert MacIntyre, who is a best-priced 125-1.

The Scot has overcome his homesickness and played well at Myrtle Beach and Valhalla. He would be at much shorter odds if this was not his Colonial debut.
