Ang and Atienza clinch top honours at the 15th Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open

 

Kuala Lumpur, May 8: Ryan Ang and Aloysa Atienza made it a double victory for Singapore as they emerged triumphant at the 15th Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open on Wednesday.

Ang fired rounds of 69, 68 and 68 to sign off with a commanding 12-shot victory over Malaysia’s Nateeshvar Ganesh in the 54-hole stroke play event held at the Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan (KGPA)

“This win means a lot to me. I felt like I’ve been knocking on the door a couple of times, but haven’t been able to piece together an overall solid tournament.

“To finally get over the line and win it in a wire-to-wire fashion made it all the more special,” said Ang.

“It’s also my 1st international win so hopefully this opens the floodgates for bigger wins to come. The hard work is slowly paying off, I’ll savour this win, but I’ll be back on the grind again as I still have got much to improve.”

Atienza, meanwhile, also capped a memorable week for Singapore by clinching the women’s title by seven shots after carding rounds of 73, 73, and 73 for a winning total of three-over-par 219.

Like Ang, Atienza was also equally elated with her first victory abroad. Despite admitting she could have played better, it was still a performance that the 25-year-old knows will be a confidence booster for her.

“It’s my first international win! It surely means a lot to me because it just shows my progress over the last couple of months, especially on the mental side of it.

“It was not the prettiest golf game this week in terms of ball striking, but keeping my head in the game kept me in contention and consistent and I’m just grateful for the chance to win.

“To see that I’m able to play consistent scores with my ‘C’ game means so much more than the win itself. It’s a win for me and win for my team and SGA,” said Atienza.
