Georgia GCSA names 10 recipients of its 2023 Legacy Scholarship
The Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association (GCSA) announced 10 recipients of its 2023 Legacy Scholarship. Georgia GCSA awards the scholarship to children and grandchildren of members. A partnership with the Jerry Pate Company helped fund the awards.
Scott Slemp from Piedmont Driving Club, Brandon Hayes from the Great Waters course at Reynolds Lake Oconee, Hoyt Ellspermann from The Creek Club at Reynolds Lake Oconee and Kyle Marshall from Capital City Club led the scholarship interviews with help from Jamie Pate of Jerry Pate Company.
The Georgia GCSA scholarship committee independently reviewed the applications. Criteria for selection included academic achievement, extracurricular and community involvement, leadership and outside employment. Students submitted an essay stating how traits acquired from their Georgia GCSA member parent or grandparent prepared them for their next chapter in life.
To be eligible, one or more of the applicant’s parents or grandparents must have been a Georgia GCSA member for five or more consecutive years and must be a current Georgia GCSA member in one of the following classifications: A, B, C, Retired A, Retired B superintendent or AA Life. Students must be enrolled full-time at an accredited institution for the next academic year.
The 2023 award recipients include:
- Top scholar: Addison Griffith, daughter of Scott Griffith, CGCS, University of Georgia Golf Course
- Top scholar: Mack Morris, stepson of Tim Busek, St. Ives Country Club
- Thomas Scott, son of Andy Scott, Newman Country Club
- Molly Miller, daughter of Bryan Miller, Cartersville Country Club
- Celia O’Shea, daughter of Kevin O’Shea, Reynolds Lake Oconee
- Charles Wilder, son of Gary Wilder, The Club at River Forest
- Kathryn Baker, daughter of Rhett Baker, Ohoopee Match Club
- Lucy Hunt, son of Bill Hunt, Athens Country Club
- Maxwell Thebeau, son of Tom Thebeau, The Chimneys Golf Course
- Brian Petrelli, son of Chris Petrelli, Eagle’s Landing Country Club
