Talking Trash – in a Good Way!
by Sarah Azpeitia, 2023 ATT Byron Nelson Junior Reporter
On May 13th, I interviewed a lady whose name is Mary Riddle. She is Director of Sustainability with Rico Solutions. If you don’t know what that means, it means that she is a person who cares about the environment and analyzes information to try and create a better future.
Me and Tanek, my fellow reporter, asked Ms. Riddle questions about her job and herself. All of her answers were good and unique at the same time. This is what we learned:
· She ended up working in sustainability because she’s always cared about the environment. Also, she doesn’t like it when people litter.
· The hardest part of her job is getting people at events to care about the importance of things like using aluminum cups and refillable water bottles instead of plastic water bottles.
· The Collin County Master Gardeners helped out at the tournament this year by educating people about what is trash and what is recycling. Mary told us that if there is too much trash thrown into a recycling bin, then everything just gets treated as trash. She was very happy that the Master Gardeners were helping to separate out the trash and recycling.
· There’s about 16 big blue dumpsters of trash created at the tournament each day.
· The worst part of her job is when she has to pick poopy diapers out of the recycling bin.
When she said this, I was shocked. I wondered why don’t people put recycling in the recycle bin and trash in the trash bin? How is that so hard?
I enjoyed speaking with Mary Riddle. I knew we had a connection because we both care about the environment, and we both like talking about good food.
Next time you go to an event, please take a moment to think about what is trash and what is recycling. And make sure that you put your baby’s poopy diapers in the trash!
