Golf tips and free bets: Picks for Farmers Insurance Open and the Dubai Desert Classic
THE FARMERS Insurance Open at Torrey Pines gets underway on Wednesday this week – finishing on Saturday so not to clash with the NFL playoffs.
And there is plenty of hope that we’ll see a more engaging leaderboard than last week at the American Express.
Jon Rahm is the favourite as he returns to the scene of his first Major win last year in the US Open.
And after complaining about last week’s course set up he’ll be looking to get back in the swing of things and maintain his slot as World No 1.
The course will certainly be more challenging, meaning we should see more of the cream rising to the top, but at 13/2 Rahm is too short to touch for a straight win.
The two I like near the top of the odds are Xander Schauffele (16/1) and Bryson DeChambeau (18/1).
Schauffele finished T2 last year, although five shots back from Patrick Reed, and is from San Diego so will be comfortable out there and will know the course well.
He hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since January 2019 (The Olympics is not a PGA Tour event) though and will be desperate to change that, but finished T12 at the Tournament of Champions so will be looking to build from that.
DeChambeau blew up in the final round of the US Open at Torrey last year with a six over after heading into the final round two shots off the lead and one ahead of eventual winner Rahm.

This is a course he can use his distance advantage on and with the new driver in the bag he’ll be looking to do just that.
Although he withdrew from the Sony due to a wrist problem so it will be interesting to see how that holds up this week.
This is a new addition to his schedule but if he can get the driving moving he could be dangerous.
With the injury concerns though, I’ll go with Schauffele this time around.
Further down the odds defending champion Reed is interesting at 40/1.
Reed has been a combined 29 shots off the winner in his two events of this calendar year but was T3 at the Hero in December.
Winning this event last year with a five shot margin shows he can more than compete despite being 149th in driving distance in 2021.
His numbers have dropped in 2022 in the two events so far but he may still be getting used to his new PXG driver.

At that 40/1 price though and with Sky paying eight places he is worth a nibble.
Over in Dubai for the DP World Tour Event Rory McIlroy starts as favourite ahead of Victor Hovland and Collin Morikawa.
Paul Casey was the winner by four shots last year, but Bernd Wiesberger was T6 and looks attractive at 28/1.
He was T12 last week despite shooting a 77 in the second round and Sky are doing seven places on this event.
