O’Connor leads Carolan Cup qualifiers home

Jimmy O’Connor led home the 16 qualifiers for the matchplay stages of the Carolan Cup with a fine score of 41pts off a playing handicap of 17.

After opening with three bogeys and two double bogeys over the first five holes he parred the sixth, seventh and ninth to turn with 19pts and then parred five more holes down the back nine – 10, 13, 14, 15 and 16 – to come home in 22pts.

That was enough to give him a one point winning margin over Michael O’Sullivan (16) who needed three rounds of countback before edging out Paddy Greene (22) after both finished on 40pts.

Teenager Lee Egan continued his fine season by winning Division One off nine with Peter McCaughey and Mark Coan taking Divisions Two and Three respectively while Aaron Grant recorded the day’s best gross score of 40pts with a round that included five birdies and just one bogey. .
