 A nice little incident for you to ponder over.

Stroke play.

Player hits a  tee ball well left into some trees and believing that he may not find the ball plays a provisional  which goes straight  over the hill but out of sight.
The player sees  his "provisional " sitting  nicely in the fairway when approaching the area and  decides that he will be just as well off playing it rather than risking the chance of finding his original in a bad spot in the woods. . And plays this ball to the green thinking it was his provisional
When the player reaches the green  he discovers that this ball was his original - it must have struck a tree and rebounded in n to the fairway.

Rulings in the following adapted  scenarios .
(1)  The player played this ball onto the green  without ever searching for his original.
(2)  The player played this ball after searching for his original for 3 minutes.
(3) The player played this ball after searching  for his original for 2 minutes.
(4) The player played this ball and then searched for his original for 3 minutes.
