Back in 2015 it was announced that the US Open would head back to The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts in 2022.

The Championship course has had a storied history of hosting big events and yet it has been a while since we saw it on our screens, with the most recent event being the 2013 US Amateur won by Matthew Fitzpatrick.

“We are thrilled to bring the 122nd US Open Championship to such a storied golf course and a great club, one of the five clubs that founded the USGA in 1894,” said Thomas J. O’Toole Jr., then president of the USGA. “Arguably the most significant event in American golf happened there in 1913, when the young local amateur Francis Ouimet defeated the top pros of the day, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, in the first U.S. Open played at The Country Club.”

It will be the 17th USGA Championship hosted by the venue, which is second among U.S. clubs behind Merion.

As far as previous US Open’s go, it will be the 4th in its history. The first, as briefly mentioned above, came in 1913 when Ouimet beat Ray and Vardon in a playoff.

50 years later Julius Boros won the 1963 US Open in a playoff over Arnold Palmer and Jack Cupit, and finally the 1988 tournament was also decided by a playoff, between eventual winner Curtis Strange and Nick Faldo.

Other USGA championships played at the club include six US Amateurs (1910, 1922, 1934, 1957, 1982 and 2013), as well as the 1902, 1941 and 1995 US Women’s Amateurs, the 1932 and 1973 Walker Cup Matches, the 1953 US Girls’ Junior and the 1968 US Junior Amateur.

But probably most remember the golf course for the 1999 Ryder Cup and Justin Leonard’s famous and controversial monster putt which helped the United States pull off a comeback from 10-6 down heading into the singles.

“The Country Club has a long-standing, valued partnership with the United States Golf Association, so our membership is very excited and proud to have been chosen as the host site of the 2022 US Open,” said Will Fulton, The Country Club’s general chairman for the 2022 U.S. Open. “We have been fortunate to have held 16 USGA events and to have witnessed some of golf’s great moments. Along with our gracious co-hosts, the Town of Brookline, we look forward to welcoming golf fans from New England and around the world.”

Also on that day in 2015 it was announced that the 2023 US Open would be held at Los Angeles County Club, on the North Course.

And in 2024 it will return to the No.2 course at Pinehurst.
