Golf tips and free bets: Three picks for the Byron Nelson including Bryson DeChambeau and 150-1 longshot worth a look

THE Byron Nelson event takes place this week on the PGA Tour a week before the PGA Championship.

Bryson DeChambeau is the joint favourite with Jon Rahm.

Bryson DeChambeau is the favourite this week at the Byron Nelson

Rory McIlroy is taking the week off after winning at Wells Fargo, but Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama are in the field.

And our man David Facey makes his selections for the week.

Tips for AT&T Byron Nelson

Hot shot: Bryson DeChambeau, 8-1.

DeChambeau seemed to be in a desperate hurry to get to Dallas for this week’s shoot-out after mistakenly assuming he would miss the cut at the Wells Fargo.

But he should easily recoup the cost of hiring a private jet to take him back to Quail Hollow last weekend.

The Texas event moves to a new course this year, at Craig Ranch, and the word is it should offer far more birdies than Quail Hollow – where DeChambeau finished strongly, shooting 68-68 despite coming unstuck at the treacherous 18th.

This should suit him better.

Mid price: Aaron Wise, 66-1

Firmly established as one of the top ten tee to green operators on the PGA Tour, and finally found a bit of form with the putter as weekend rounds of 68-69 carried him into a share of ninth place at Quail Hollow.

Wise seems to like Texas – he played well at the Houston Open earlier in the year, and won the Byron Nelson in 2018 at its former venue, Trinity Forest.

The conditions should be pretty similar after the move across town, and he won’t mind it one bit if the wind picks up.

Long shot: Erik van Rooyen, 150-1.

Another player who seems to enjoy himself in the Lone Star state, as he knocked out Daniel Berger, Brendan Todd and Harris English to reach the last 16 of the World Match Play in Austin, and was T14 at the Texas Open a week later.

Two missed cuts and an early exit from the Masters with a wrist problem explain his big price.

But the South African showed he can mix it with the best when he finished tied third at the WGC-Mexico Championship last year, and definitely worth a second look at the odds.
