Golf tips and free bets: Three picks for the British Masters including 90-1 shot who looked good in the Canary Islands
THE British Masters takes place at the Belfry this week, and we’re on hand with our top tips for the European Tour Event.
Danny Willett is hosting the event at the four-time Ryder Cup venue.
But with the PGA Championship the following week in the USA, a number of the top European Tour players are missing out.
That means that Scot Bob MacIntyre is favourite ahead of Bernd Wiesberge and Martin Kaymer.
And our man David Facey delivers his selections for the week.
Tips for British Masters
Hot shot: Bernd Wiesberger, 18-1
The Austrian ace is used to mixing it with much better company than he finds himself in this week, and needs to re-ignite his Ryder Cup bid after looking a certainty for a European debut when he won three times in 2019.
Finished fifth at the Belfry in the UK Championship last year, shooting an impressive 65 in the final round, and looks the best value among those at the top of the market.
Mid price: Andy Sullivan, 30-1.
The little man from Nuneaton is a big player when the putter behaves, and he looks a good bet to add to his four European Tour victories this year, the most recent one coming when he blitzed the field at last year’s English Championship.
Also finished third at Wentworth and second in Dubai against stronger fields than this one, and a top ten finish at the Belfry last year ticks another important box.
Long shot: Alexander Bjork, 90-1
The Swede lost his way after a couple of impressive seasons on the European Tour in 2017 and 2018 – highlighted by a win in the Volvo China Open – hoisted him into the top sixty of the world rankings, and a top twenty finish on the 2018 Race to Dubai.
But he is still only thirty, and a share of third place in the Hero Open last year showed it is too soon to write him off, while T21 and T12 finishes in the Canary Islands swing suggest he is heading in the right direction again.
