LAISNE NEARLY LATE FOR SCHOOL BUT LEADS IN LAURO
For the second week in succession French amateur Agathe Laisne leads by one stroke from Finland’s Tiia Koivisto as we head into the final round of the season finale at the Santander Golf Tour Lauro.
On a day which saw early weather delays from unexpected strong winds overnight, 21-year-old French amateur fired a cool and composed round of 70 (-2) to reach seven-under-par and head the international leaderboard in Malaga as the season-ending event sets up for a spectacular finish.
Scheduled to sit a finance exam at 7.30pm, Laisne teed off an hour later than planned at 2.17pm but managed to squeeze in her second round by signing off with a birdie at 6.40pm – with less than an hour to spare.
With no time to think about the prospect of winning again, the 21st ranked player on the Official World Amateur Golf Rankings rushed from Lauro Golf to her hotel room, making her desk with minutes to spare.
“I thought it was going to be a bit tight for time but luckily we were able to get finished and the birdie on the last made me really happy. It’s been tough to focus on my golf and studies, but I am used to it now and I’m looking forward to starting my final year in Texas at the start of next year.”
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s final round shootout and free from more school revision until next week, Laisne looks to cap off an eventful summer on the LETAS with her second victory in three starts.
“I will just go out there any try to enjoy myself. The last three tournaments have gone so well and I am proud of how I have performed on the LETAS this year. I can’t wait to be back playing next year already.”
Trailing her by a shot in solo second place after a round of 70 of her own is Order of Merit leader, Tiia Koivisto. Wherever the LETAS has been this year, the hard-working Finn has featured. In total, she has recorded no worse than a T11 finish in four previous events including a maiden victory at the Amundi Czech Ladies Challenge and top-5 finishes in Switzerland and Spain last week.
With one hand on the Order of Merit title, Koivisto is almost certain to receive the all-important winner’s prize – a full LET card for 2021 – but nothing is certain in this game.
Showcasing the international depth of the field, the top-10 features as many as nine different nationalities with players hailing from France, Finland, England, Spain, Sweden, Portugal, Germany, Argentina and South Korea.
In solo third place is England’ Georgina Blackman who recovered from three early bogeys to add a round of 50 (-2) to her first round of 69 while the round of the day came from home-favourite Luna Sobron Galmes with a 67 (-5), which catapulted her to T4.
Due to the wind delays, only one player (Rachael Goodhall) was unable to complete her second round with the Englishwoman unable to see the 18th pin due to darkness. She returns at 9.15am along with the rest of the field who will also get underway at the same time.
As it stands 61 players including 14 amateurs will make the projected cut at +7.
