Canterbury’s 2020 Kiely Cup Canceled

Mike Kiely and Craig Fraser
Craig Fraser, the tournament director of the Kiely Cup and a Canterbury Golf Club member, has canceled the annual invitational event for high school golf teams due to COVID-19 concerns.

For the last 15 years, the tournament has been a showcase for boys high school golf teams from around the state. For the last several years, it has been a two-day, 36-hole event crowning both a team and individual champion.

“I originally hoped reducing the tournament to one-day of 18 holes, and minus the Sunday evening banquet and an abbreviated awards ceremony, might have allowed the kids to experience a round at Canterbury under competitive conditions,” Fraser said. “However, many teams have a long 3+ hour drive in a van. Simply put, the health, safety and welfare of each player and our club staff outweighed any enjoyment this year’s tournament might provide.”

The 2020 event had been slated for September 13-14, with the following teams and their head coaches invited:

– Columbus Academy Knights (Defending Champions); Craig Yakscoe
– Archbishop Moeller Crusaders; Dan Dunlap
– Archbishop Hoban Knights; Quinn Parker
– Brunswick Blue Devils; Chad Thompson
– Canton Central Catholic Crusaders; David Oates
– Crooksville Ceramics; Brian Carney
– Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy Royals; Jon Bucciarelli
– Dublin Jerome Celtics; Taylor Hare
– Gilmour Academy Lancers; James Polak
– Olentangy Liberty Patriots; Ryan Snivley
– St. Ignatius Wildcats; P. J. Meyers
– Stow-Munroe Bulldogs; Joseph Vojtko
– Sugarcreek Garaway Pirates; Brad Nyholm
– University School; Eddie Neer
– Walsh Jesuit Warriors; Bill Reilly
