Get a Ruling •
The USGA answer is now in and, happily, it agrees with us.
United States Golf Association - USGA Based on the description of this scenario, the player has played a wrong ball from the rough and gets the general penalty for doing so - Rule 6.3c. Since this happened in stroke play, the stroke made with the wrong ball and any more strokes before the mistake is corrected (including strokes made and any penalty strokes solely from playing that ball) do not count. Therefore, using preferred lies (marking, lifting and placing) was a continuation of the play of that wrong ball and the player must correct by continuing with the original ball by playing it as it lies or taking relief under the Rules.
