Costa Navarino Golf Week October 2019
Apart from Fancourt, I cannot think of a better all round resort than Costa Navarino for a week or two of golf. Situated on the western, unspoiled Greek coastal region, this 5 star Westin Resort is superbly run in the friendliest and most helpful manner. The hotel and amenities live up to their 5 star rating and the golf courses offer very playable, while different, challenges. This was our inaugural event here and it was extremely well received, born out by the fact that several have already rebooked for next year!
The resort has various pool areas and easy access to its own large private beach for sun lovers, while “the Square” is a lively evening area for entertainment, dining and cocktails. The Dunes golf clubhouse is a couple of minutes walk from the hotel reception and offers all day snacks and meals plus the Flame restaurant for evening dining. In addition a 10 minute taxi ride away is the beach side village of Giova with a selection of local restaurants, a couple of which, apart from good local fare, we found very good dealing with groups.
From arrival to departure one does not need to worry about dealing with luggage or golf clubs. The concierge run a slick service and once golf clubs are delivered (by the concierge) at The Dunes clubhouse they appear each day ready for play whether at the Dunes or Bay course a 15 minute transfer away. And, following your final round are delivered back to the bedroom for packing. The practice facilities are free to use before or, if you have the energy, after play and are first class. The superb short game area will be particularly welcome on coaching weeks.
As previously mentioned the courses are ideal resort golf. The Dunes longer and wider but with the designer Bernard Langer’s precision required when approaching the greens. Our first round here saw Patrick K score a fine 36 points to be leading individual and he, Neil and Andrew returned an excellent 83 team score.
We travelled 15 minutes by the resort shuttle bus for the second days golf at the Trent Jones design Bay course. Built into the hillside with buggies included, this is a shorter course with fabulous views over the bay from the majority of holes and some playing beach side. Arnold’s 38 leading the individual scores and along with Neil and Ray won the team event with 85.
Threatened by thunderstorms for Tuesday the resort acted superbly by rearranging golf for the following day for those who preferred to change the day off. Those who chose to play did indeed encounter a huge storm after 9 holes and again the resort acted promptly, to enable a return the following day to complete the round.
