Firstly thanks to all those that commented and contributed to this inquiry. Hope all benefited from the exchanges. I certainly did!
I concluded that knowing if a ball is or not the ball in play is key before touching or lifting deliberately a ball. Sound obvious perhaps, but there are many situations that can arise when “intuition” may mislead.
Example:
Player places unknowingly a ball on tee outside teeing zone and the proceeds to make an air shot. Is that ball in play? Can the player pick-up the ball without in cutting a penalty? How should the player proceed?
Well it seems it depends on correctly answering if ball is in play? Knowing if it’s match or stroke play (see R6.1b(1) respectively R6.1b(2) and so forth.
