Golfers Guide To Fuengirola, Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol is a haven for golfers with this particular region of Spain, home to some of the finest golf courses in Europe.

One of the biggest draws of the Costa del Sol, of course is the weather. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, golfers get to play some of Spain’s best golf courses almost year round.

One of the Costa del Sol’s most loved tourist resorts is Fuengirola. With around seven kilometres of golden sandy beaches, bars, restaurants and superb nightlife, Fuengirola has long been a favourite for British and European holidaymakers.

Fuengirola Weather

As Fuengirola is situated on the Southern coast of Spain, it boasts a glorious sub-tropical climate and is bathed in warm sunshine offering long hot summers and mild winters.

With the warm weather comes the opportunity for a great amount of outdoor activity and this is why Fuengirola and the Costa del Sol in general is so popular with golfers.

If you are planning on playing golf in the Costa del Sol, we would recommend avoiding the months of July and August as the temperatures can get very hot and make it unsuitable for outdoor sports.

Generally, the best months to play golf in Fuengirola and the Costa del Sol are April, May, June, September and October.

Not only will it be a lot more comfortable, but you will also have less chance of encountering any wet weather.

Fuengirola Beaches

Fuengirola has one of the longest seaside walks in the Costa del Sol and Spain with the promenade stretching around seven kilometres, starting at El Ejido beach in the West to Torreblanca in the East. 

The main boardwalk or Paseo Marítimo Rey de España is very beautiful with flowers, sculptures and palm trees. It’s the perfect place to take a morning or evening stroll, a cycle or even a jog if you’re feeling athletic.

There are seven main beaches to choose from in Fuengirola which are El Ejido, Santa Amalia, San Francisco, Los Boliches, Las Gaviotas, Carvajal, and Torreblanca.

Dotted along the Fuengirola coastline you will find ample places to stop for a drink or bite to eat including the popular Fuengirola harbour where you can watch the fishing boats leaving for their daily catch. There are also a number of Chiringuito beach restaurants, which serve a range of local Spanish dishes and fresh fish.

The beaches of Fuengirola are deep and long meaning there is ample space for you to park your deckchair and get settled for an afternoon of sun worshiping. 

Nightlife, Restaurants and Bars

Fuengirola is a large town so you will never have any trouble finding somewhere to eat or drink.

There is something for everyone. If you like a good old English pub there are a number on offer including the well known London Pub, which can be found on the main promenade.

Running parallel to the beach you will find Fish Alley. Although the name doesn’t make it sound very appealing, here you will find a long alley lined with an assortment of bars and restaurants serving everything from burgers and chips to Indian and Chinese favourites.

You will also find a McDonald’s and Burger King conveniently located on the main Paseo Maritimo promenade opposite the beach close to the harbor area.

There are also a number of clubs and discotheque bars in the town including the popular Heaven’s Gate.

Golf Courses

A golfers guide wouldn’t be any good without reference to the many golf courses located in the Fuengirola area.

There are around 10 great golf courses to play in the area including Chaparral, Santana Golf, Mijas Golf, Alhaurin Golf, Torrequebrada, Calanova and Noria Golf.

The La Cala Golf Resort is a short drive away and is home to three great courses. La Cala Resort is a favourite with many professional sporting teams and individuals throughout the year due to the climate and the excellent sporting facilities on offer.

If you head to the West of Fuengirola you will reach Marbella, which is also home to many of the Costa del Sol’s best courses including Finca Cortesin, Marbella Golf & Country Club, Los Flamingos, Rio Real and Santa Maria.

Transportation

Fuengirola has an excellent public transport service. 

From the main bus terminal in the center of town you can hop on a bus and discover all of the major towns along the coast with routes to Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Malaga to the East, all the way to other popular towns to the West including Marbella and Estepona.

Fuengirola also has a train station at Los Boliches with routes to Malaga City and Alora. Stops include Benalmadena (Arroyo de La Miel), Torremolinos, Plaza Mayor shopping outlet and Malaga Airport.

Being a large town, taxi cabs can be found on nearly every main street.

Tourist Hotspots

While not on the golf course, sunning yourself on the beach or enjoying the great nightlife, you will have plenty of opportunity to savor everything else the Costa del Sol has to offer.
