Liverpool’s Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa offers putts, pedicures and pools

0 17

WHAT IS IT LIKE? Putts, pedicures, pools and a new Tommy Fleetwood Academy await at this refurbished retreat on the “Golf Coast”, not far north of Liverpool.

Above all, it’s a place for keen golfers. Surrounding the red-brick main building are two courses: Formby Hall’s 18-hole parklands challenge, a regular on the European Seniors circuit, and a nine-hole pitch-and-putt dunes alternative.

ROOMS ANY GOOD? Even the standard-category Classic Rooms are a decent size. Terraces or Juliet balconies are uniform, as are tea trays and bathtubs. The TVs are a bit teeny. Light sleepers should note that on weekends, booming post-wedding discos are audible in most rooms until around midnight.

EAT HERE OR GRAB A PIZZA? Though the restaurant overlooking the greens is cosy, its food is functional. The breakfast buffet has a broad range of hot grub.

WHAT ELSE? Golfers can delight in a new academy overseen by shaggy-haired Ryder Cup legend Tommy Fleetwood, open since June. There’s also a putting school devised by Harold Swash, whose client list includes Rory McIlroy. Bikes are available for hire at £15 per day.

SO YOU WOULD GO BACK? Yes, and that’s from someone who has never hit a single golf shot

WHAT’S THE DAMAGE? One night’s B&B is from £74.50pp based on two sharing.
