Donald Trump played a final round of golf in Ireland today before flying back home to the US.

The US President visited his resort in Doonbeg, Co Clare, to practice his swing.

But he was caught off guard when a class of school children from nearby Clohanes National School showed up uninvited.

The youngsters were pleased to see Mr Trump but pupil Lucy Shanahan said the president was not as tall as she thought he would be.

He’s billed as 6ft 2in (1.88m) but Lucy didn’t seem impressed.

She soon got over her disappointment and managed to speak to the US leader.

Lucy said: ‘He was very nice, he was asking if there was going to be any future Presidents there and did we like golf.

‘We talked about golf and school, it was good to meet him, but it’s a bit overwhelming.’

Her sister Abbey, 16, added: ‘I debated whether to even get up early to go to school today, I was going to lie on for another half hour.’

Clohanes National School principal Aideen O’Mahony said the teachers and pupils were very ‘excited’ to meet Mr Trump.

He said: ‘As he was coming up the ninth fairway, he waved to the children and we were waiting on the hillside, and then one of the secret service came over to us and said “the president would like to meet the teachers”.

‘There were four members of staff there, so the four of us went up on to the tee box and he shook hands with us and he spoke to us.’

Mr Trump and his wife Melania have left Ireland following their three-day visit.

The US President took off from Shannon Airport in his Air Force One shortly before 3.30pm, an hour behind schedule.

He is returning to the United States after spending two nights at his golf resort in Doonbeg.
