Aphrodite Hills – May 2019

0 26

Having been to Aphrodite Hills in March some 5 years ago and being advised that May was the month to visit, I am delighted to report what good advice that was. In addition, I was a little nervous of the change in ownership and separation of the golf club from the hotel, however, all fears were completely unfounded. The hotel is as good as I remember, the golf course having had a €2.75 million makeover, pristine, and the two run seamlessly side by side.

One can walk from the hotel to the golf club where clubs can be stored, or into the “village” literally next door to the hotel, over the road from the clubhouse and has restaurants, a pub, supermarket and even a Costa Coffee catering for all tastes.

The hotel itself has several restaurants offering a variety of cuisine even on a half board package and with adult only areas, while the clubhouse provides a lovely patio area overlooking the 18th. Here, one can enjoy a lunch and a little apres golf while conveniently forgetting ones own attempts at approaching this par 5 protected by water, (photo below from patio) and have a smile at others misfortune!

Three rounds at Aphrodite Hills and two at the contrasting, but equally enjoyable, Secret Valley GC, all but next door, made for an excellent golf package. The former set up on the cliff tops with glorious sea views, a ravine or two to negotiate, but on the whole generous fairways with large, undulating greens creating the main challenge. Secret Valley, as the name suggests, runs through a Valley beneath Aphrodite Hills where a stream meanders and is a little narrower and more intimidating from several tees.

Our numbers worked out to be able to play a daily mixed 4bbb with different partners, while running our usual individual league, scored on a points per position basis. The ladies dominated the week, Anne (above left) a clear winner from Doreen our runner up, and the final days Ladies v Gents match confirmed that dominance!!

Without doubt a venue to which we will return that also has good coaching facilities.

Best regards
David
